Chapter 3 - The Recording They Played in CourtCyrus's desperate pleas echoed off the marble walls of the lobby as federal officers led him away, though I didn't once look back over my shoulder. In the weeks that followed, the entire empire he'd built on lies, betrayal, and stolen funds collapsed like a house of cards caught in a hurricane.

The forensic audit built from Winona's own ledger proved entirely ironclad. Cyrus's board of directors voted unanimously to terminate him for cause, stripping him of his equity outright and filing a civil suit to recover the embezzled corporate pension funds. Meanwhile his young mistress, realization striking her the instant his accounts froze solid, abandoned him completely without a backward glance. When federal investigators questioned her about the offshore transfers and luxury gifts, she quickly signed a full cooperation agreement, handing over every text message, email, and receipt proving Cyrus had knowingly used stolen money to fund her entire extravagant lifestyle.

Six months after Winona's death, I sat in the front row of the federal courtroom. Cyrus sat at the defense table wearing an orange jumpsuit. Without his expensive suits, golden tan, and arrogant posture, he looked genuinely small, hollow, and utterly broken down.

The prosecutor played the final piece of evidence for the entire courtroom — a recorded phone call from that hospital room, the exact night Winona died. It wasn't merely the audio of the heart monitor's final, agonizing flatline. It was the crisp recording of his own mistress's slurred, mocking laughter, ridiculing my desperation while Winona drew her very last breath in the background.

The courtroom fell into dead silence at that. Even Cyrus's own defense attorney lowered his eyes in genuine shame.

When the judge finally delivered the sentence, there was no mercy shown whatsoever. Cyrus was convicted of grand larceny, corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and tax evasion. He received twelve years inside a maximum-security federal penitentiary, was ordered to pay full restitution, and was stripped entirely of every remaining asset attached to his name.

As bailiffs stepped forward to escort him out of the courtroom, Cyrus turned to look at me one final time. Tears streamed steadily down his own hollow cheeks. "Bridget... please," he mouthed silently, no sound behind it.

I held his gaze for three long seconds. I didn't feel anger toward him. I didn't feel any real triumph, either. I felt only a quiet, profound sense of liberation instead.

I slowly turned my back on him and walked straight out of that courtroom, directly into the light waiting outside.
