Chapter 1 - What I Replaced in the Vanity Drawer"Mrs. Hale, your husband and another woman just arrived at the emergency room stuck together," the nurse said flatly over the line.

The call came through at 2:07 in the morning, while I lay wide awake inside our quiet house in Larkspur. My husband, Adrian, had told me he'd be spending the night closing a major real estate deal out in Ridgeline. I feigned pure shock over the phone, slipped quickly into a robe, and asked which hospital they'd actually been taken to. The nurse at Saint Anthony Medical paused awkwardly before explaining that the couple had apparently mistaken a tube of industrial adhesive for a bottle of intimate lubricant, leaving doctors genuinely unable to separate them without direct medical intervention.

I knew perfectly well exactly how that had happened, because I was the one who'd arranged it myself.

Three days earlier, my flight to Cascade City had been canceled entirely, thanks to a sudden blizzard rolling over the mountains. I returned home unannounced to our estate in Ashcombe Hills, carrying a box of gourmet caramel chocolates Adrian genuinely adored. Stepping into the foyer, I heard muffled laughter drifting down from our second-floor master suite. Adrian was supposedly stuck in a late-night corporate meeting, while Yasmin, my own sister-in-law and my brother Gavin's wife, was supposedly visiting her sick mother over in Fernwood.

I climbed the stairs quietly and found the two of them together, in my own bed.

I didn't scream. I didn't make a single scene. I simply covered my own mouth, slipped back out the front door entirely unnoticed, and sat for two full hours inside a small coffee shop downtown. I cried until my espresso went freezing cold, then finally remembered exactly who I'd been before marrying five years earlier. I was Katrina Kingsley, the youngest Chief Financial Officer Kingsley Global Enterprises had ever appointed — not the submissive, quiet housewife Adrian had spent half a decade carefully molding me into instead.

That same night, I searched through the leather briefcase he always carried on his frequent business trips. I discovered hidden hotel reservations, receipts for diamond jewelry, and one small glass jar he guarded with unusual, excessive care inside his vanity drawer. The very next morning, I bought industrial-strength adhesive, emptied the jar's contents entirely, and refilled it. I wasn't particularly proud of my own pettiness, but I genuinely wanted his grand lie exposed for the whole world to see.

Before heading to the hospital, I put on full makeup, slipped into a sharp black tailored suit, and packed six full months of hard evidence — gathered patiently by a private investigator — into a leather folder. When I finally pulled back the blue curtain in the emergency room, Adrian went entirely pale. Yasmin immediately buried her tear-streaked face into the hospital pillow. The two of them lay side by side, completely immobilized, surrounded by ER doctors visibly struggling to keep straight faces.

"Katrina, my love, I swear to you this is all a terrible misunderstanding," Adrian stammered, voice trembling badly.

"Sure it is," I replied coldly, stepping closer to the bed. "Since when exactly do you give my brother's own wife deep tissue massages at two in the morning?"

The whole emergency room fell into absolute silence, everyone present holding their breath at once.

I opened my folder directly in front of them both, pulling out photographic proof, suspicious bank statements, and an audio recording where Adrian openly admitted he'd only stayed married to me purely to gain control of my family's legacy. Yasmin instantly burst into hysterical tears. Realizing he was thoroughly trapped, Adrian turned his head sharply and angrily accused me outright of setting the entire thing up myself.

"Marrying me purely to steal my company was your original trap," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "This ridiculous medical emergency is simply a natural consequence."

Then I pulled out my phone and dialed my brother Gavin directly.

Gavin arrived twenty minutes later, completely soaked through from the pouring rain outside. Upon spotting the two of them fused together on the gurney, he threw off his coat and lunged straight at Adrian, though two male nurses tackled him just in time to stop it. Yasmin immediately wept and insisted she'd been forced into the whole affair, while Adrian barked back that she'd actually seduced him. They turned viciously on each other, shattering whatever loyalty had existed between them in under sixty seconds flat.

The chief surgeon cleared his throat and asked me to sign the official authorization form permitting surgery. Before setting pen to paper, I looked down at Adrian directly and demanded the combination code to the hidden safe inside his private study. Terrified of remaining permanently fused to his own mistress, he blurted the numbers out instantly, no hesitation whatsoever. I signed the paperwork and watched silently as orderlies wheeled their shared gurney straight into the operating room.

As the heavy double doors swung shut behind them, my brother turned to me, expression utterly devastated. "Katrina, what else do you actually know about all this?" Gavin asked, voice cracking hard with emotion.

I clutched the heavy leather folder tight against my chest, already knowing the very worst was still yet to come. "This affair is simply the tip of the iceberg, Gavin," I whispered softly. "Millions of dollars have vanished entirely. Corporate secrets have been sold outright. And one secret medical decision ruined my entire life."

I could hardly believe, in that exact moment, the dark nightmare that was still waiting to unfold.
