Chapter 3 - What My Parents Finally SaidI walked out and picked up our son. Told him plainly we were going on a "sleepover" over at Grandma and Grandpa's house. He was excited in that particular way only small children genuinely manage to be about things like that.

My parents opened their own front door, saw him standing there, and both of them simply broke apart completely. My mother started sobbing outright. My father grabbed hard onto the doorframe, like he genuinely needed it just to keep himself standing upright. They apologized — for cutting me off all those years, for staying silent the entire time, for never once actually meeting their own grandson.

I didn't tell them "it's okay." Because it genuinely wasn't. But I did say, "Thank you for finally saying that to me."

We hired a lawyer shortly afterward. The divorce itself turned genuinely messy, and I hated that particular part of it deeply. I didn't actually want to become his enemy. I simply couldn't manage being his wife anymore, that's all. We worked out custody arrangements, financial matters, scheduling logistics between us.

Our son knows only the simplified, kid-friendly version of the whole story. "Dad made a really big mistake, a long time ago," I told him gently. "He lied about something important. Lying breaks trust between people. Grown-ups mess things up sometimes too, sweetheart."
